Generic Shugart 50-pin Module

This module can be used with all 8โ€œ drives that use the 50-pin Shugart-standard pinout in either Card Edge or IDC. The encompasses pretty much all standard 8โ€ floppy drives.

Signals

  • The Applesauce will automatically actuate the TG43 signal line as needed during the disk writing process.
  • If you are using a double-sided drive that has the 2SIDED signal that signifies whether the disk media is single or double sided, then it will automatically be used to determine the number of sides to image.
  • There are 3 DRIVE SELECT lines, and when the xpand-o-rama is told to enable the drive, it will signal on all 3 lines. This is to make sure that no matter what the drive select jump on the drive is set to, it will activate it.

Power

The module will signal the xpand-o-rama to enable AC power and +24V DC to be available for use by the drive.

Most drives that have an AC powered spindle motor use the AMP 1-480700-0 3-Position connector to provide the power. The connector and pinout:

For DC power, there are a couple of different common connectors. Older drives use an AMP 1-480270-0 6-Position connector that provides +24V, +5V, and -5V. Some later drives use this same connector, but don't use the -5V lines.

Many later 8โ€œ drives switched over to the AMP 1-480424-0 4-Position connector to provide +24V and +5V.
