5.25" PC Floppy Drives
The Applesauce+ and the Applesauce (rev 2) work with most PC floppy drives.
A specific power cable is required for these drives. It is not recommended to use a separate power supply, and doing so may damage the Applesauce. The Applesauce+ is more resilient to such damage than the rev 2, but damage could still occur.
This cable is available in the following items:
Note that the Applesauce (rev 2) requires an additional breakout PCB which is not included with the cables intended for the Applesauce+.
The floppy drive cable in these kits is unique to Applesauce; however, a standard PC drive cable will work if connected correctly (be careful with pin 1)!
The Applesauce+ supports up to three drives connected to this cable, but in most cases it is not practical to use more than two. Ensure that the correct drive ID is selected. If you are having strange issues such as the motor not spinning, it is likely that the drive ID is incorrectly set.
If the drive supports both low-density disks (300 RPM) and high-density disks (360 RPM), then it best to allow the Applesauce to control the speed. This way the client software can analyze the flux timings to figure out at which speed the disk was written, then switch to the correct speed for imaging.
⚠️ Always update the Drive Configuration after changing jumpers!
The following applies to the original Applesauce only:
⚠️ The cable has two connectors, but only connect one drive at a time!
Drives can be configured to be either Drive 1 or Drive 2—the Applesauce will try both. The drive should also be configured for a non-twisted cable.
